Airline tickets, hotel accommodations and rental car reservations online

HCI International (HCII), under the leadership of Lawrence Hutson, served as the Chief Technology Architect, Designer, and Developer of www.Travelocity.com for The SABRE Group. HCII began development of Travelocity in July of 1995. It was launched on March 12, 1996 on time and within budget. Travelocity is the first real online transaction processing system of its kind on the Internet. Travelocity provides:

  • Ability to book and purchase airline, hotel, and car reservations through SABRE, a world wide Computer Reservation System (CRS)

  • Travel information on world wide destinations

  • Purchase of travel merchandise

  • Discussion with other travelers through chat rooms and forums

Travelocity exist in different geographical locations and provides seamless login, registration, and context integration with other WWW sites through authentication and context integration servers designed by HCII.

Many airlines, hotels, and some 12,000 travel agencies around the world now use the Travelocity design and infrastructure. Travelocity is one of the largest electronic commerce and transaction processing sites on the Internet today. The unique architecture and design of Travelocity still stands today, almost four years after it was conceived by HCII.

The architecture and design of Travelocity focused around a toolset that enabled business analysts to make rapid changes to this electronic commerce system. Business analysts were able to make changes without the aid of system or application programmers and without effecting any of the backend systems that Travelocity interfaces with. Travelocity interfaced with many host and legacy systems in an online and real-time manner. HCII was directly involved in:

  • Selection of the hardware vendors for the production, certification and testing, and development systems

  • Design of the hosting infrastructure

  • Quality and assurance (Q&A) planning

  • Capacity Planning
